Celtic Plate 100k

BRILLIANT DEBUT BY WESTON - AND NICHOLLS TACKLES 100M

Just a week after winning the North Wales 10-mile title Wrexham's Daniel Weston turned in a superb performance for Wales in the Celtic Plate 100k race in Gravesend.

The race incorporated the British championships and was won by Bournemouth's Steve Way, third Briton in this year's London Marathon, in a new British record of 6-19.30. He finished an amazing 45 minutes ahead of his nearest challenger.

Weston, still a novice at ultra-distance, finished a highly creditable 10th and was first of three Welsh finishers in 7-43.07.

The first woman home was Wales' Jen Salter (Les Croupiers) in 8-24.53.

Meanwhile Prestatyn's George Nicholls, with only a couple of ultras under his belt, took on his biggest challenge yet, the Thames Towpath 100-mile race.

The multi-terrain race started in Richmond and finished in Oxford, with runners continuing through the night.

Of 227 starters only 147 finished and George was an excellent 41st in 21 hours 36 minutes despite wandering off-course three times.
