Birmingham Cross Challenge

IOLO TAKES UK SERIES TITLE

After a superb winter Menai's Iolo Hughes clinched the UK Cross-Challenge under-17 men's title when he finished third in the final race at Birmingham.

 His sister Cari Hughes was unable to reproduce her equally impressive season-long form, finishing 9th in the day, but over the five-race series who took an excellent second place in the U15 class.

 The meeting incorporated the UK inter-counties' championship and again attracted the cream of the country's off-road athletes.

 The North Wales under-15 boys' squad, who have done so well at national level over the past couple of seasons, finished a highly creditable 8th overall, with the Wrexham pair of Christian Smith and Matthew Willis13th and 16th respectively, and Oliver Barbaresi (Menai) 26th. The fourth counter, Joseph Crutchley (Maldwyn) finished 146th.

 Welsh under-20s' ladies' champion Georgina Outten (Colwyn Bay) led her race in the early stages but pulled out after feeling unwell. Lydia Sharp (Gateshead and Eryri) finished 19th.

 North Wales League champion Alison Lavender (Oswestry) finished 15th in the high-quality senior ladies' competition .
