Athlete's Profile 15

ATHLETE'S PROFILE (15)

GEORGE NIXON

CLUB: Prestatyn RC

ANY PREVIOUS CLUBS: Wrexham

AGE AND D.O.B.: 61 ; 23.4.52

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING: 40 years (I had an 8-year break in my 40s)

ANY OTHER SPORTS PLAYED: None

OTHER HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: Gardening, dog-walking and reading athletes' biographies

FAVOURITE RACING DISTANCE: 10k

FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY: No current races, but the Bale Lake 11.25m was always a favourite as the competition was always good.

FAVOURITE TRAINING SESSION: 5 miles off-road.

PROUDEST MOMENT: Winning the NW Cross-Country Champs in 1983. Having come second to Tony Blackwell three times I was up against Tecwyn "Taff" Davies, then one of Britian's top vets and a really tough competitor.

WHOM DO YOU MOST ADMIRE (INSIDE AND OUTSIDE ATHLETICS) AND WHY:  Outside - Bobby Charlton, who was a boyhood hero, a great footballer and a great man.  Inside - Alberto Salazar, a great runner who has put a lot back into the sport and has played a key part in Mo Farah's success.

ANY PERSONAL AMBITIONS: To win a Welsh vest at the British and Irish Masters' CC International.

ANY REGRETS: Not winning a Welsh Masters' vest.

ANY EMBARRASSING EXPERIENCES: Losing my running spikes just before the inter-counties' cross-country championships, then finding them with a minute to spare.

WHAT CHANGES, IF ANY, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE SPORT: a) Cross-country running back in the Olympics  b) A Welsh team competing again in the European CC Championships as I think it would give club runners an incentive and improve performances.  c)  The London Marathon to give greater priority to club runners, in line with its original aim of improving the standard of distance running in this country.
