ATHLETE'S PROFILE (12)
Arwel Lewis
CLUB: Eryri Harriers
ANY PREVIOUS CLUBS: Army
AGE AND DATE OF BIRTH: 55 - 29/08/1958
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING: 39 years
ANY OTHER SPORTS PLAYED: Football
OTHER HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: Football (I would go and watch a kickabout in the local park); Rugby League
FAVOURITE RACING DISTANCE: Half-Marathon
FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY: Obviously, the Caernarfon 10k which I have won in the past and because I have been organising the race for the past 12 years. Other than that, the Nick Beer 10k for its scenery and atmosphere. I would also include the Eryri/Snowdonia Marathon, the Snowdon race and the 4 Lakes 30k - in fact any race with a hill in it.
FAVOURITE TRAINING SESSION: The long run, especially the 4 Lakes Race route
PROUDEST MOMENT: Probably my first Welsh vest (Aberdeen Marathon in 1986). Though I had previously run for GB that first Welsh vest meant so much more to me.
WHOM DO YOU MOST ADMIRE (INSIDE ATHLETICS AND OUT) AND WHY: Those who give up their time and work for nothing to ensure races go ahead. Also charity workers who also give up their time for nothing to help others worse off than themselves and expect nothing in return.
ANY PERSONAL AMBITIONS: To keep running and racing for as long as possible.
ANY REGRETS: I should have run a sub-2-20 marathon.
ANY EMBARRASSING EXPERIENCES: Fell down a hole while running in the fell relays at Calder Valley - that was one of many.
WHAT CHANGES (IF ANY) WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE SPORT: More recognition for endurance athletes who compete on the road, trail, cross-country and fells/mountains. Track and field seem to get all the recognition and glory.
