Welsh U17/U20 champs

NW THROWERS SHINE IN SWANSEA

With difficult weather conditions facing the track athletes it was no surprise that it was the throwers who shone at the Welsh under-17s and under-20s championships in Swansea.

North Wales has an outstanding crop of young field athletes at present they came away with a huge haul of medals.

Honours were shared in the Battle of the Giants, the under-17 men. Nathan Thomason (Colwyn Bay) beat his Wrexham rival Matthew Williams in the shot but the1-2 positions were reversed in the discus.

Welshpool's Adele Nicoll (Birchfield) unsurprisingly won the U17 discus and shot and in the older age-group Georgia Bates (Deeside) also did the "double" in the long-jump and 100m hurdles, in addition to gaining silver in the high jump.

There was a North Wales 1-2-3 in the U20 800m, with Newtown's Gwynant Jones (Cardiff), splitting the Colwyn Bay pair of Tom Earley and Tom Harding. All-rounder Connor Laverty came away with one gold and two silvers.
