Welsh U13, U15 and senior champs (Day 1)

ANOTHER GOLD FOR CARI

On what was a good day overall for Menai Track and Field athletes Cari Hughes claimed yet another national title on the first day of the Welsh under-132, under-15s and senior championships in Cardiff.

She won her U15 800-metre heat and then took gold in the final in 2-16.09, comfortably ahead of her closest challenger.

Her clubmate Cliff Schwabauer  had two silvers in the U15 300m and shot and Adele Nicoll (Birchfield) from Welshpool duly claimed a double success in the senior discus and shot. After two no-throws in the discus she came good with a winning throw of 43.11.

Another winner was Hawarden's Sally Peake (Birchfield), whose single clearance of 4.01 metres in the pole vault was enough to retain her title, although it was way below her season's best.

Two days earlier Peake finished sixth in the IAAF Challenge meeting in Ostrava with a vault of 4.12.
