GB U20/U23 champs

JONES AND NICOLL STRIKE GOLD

Hammer-thrower Osian Jones (Liverpool Harriers, ex-Menai) had a massive morale boost in his preparations for next month's Commonwealth Games when he smashed his pb in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland U20/U23 championships in Bedford.

The Liverpool University student produced a huge throw of 65.91m - a pb by almost two metres - to move up to third in the Welsh all-time placings and take gold at the championship.

Welshpool's Adele Nicoll (Birchfield) was also in great form, winning the U20 shot with a putt of 14.23m and also taking bronze in the discus.

Charlie Hulson (Sale, ex-Deeside) gained silver in the U23 1,500m in 14-36.95, about three seconds outside his best, and Hannah Thomas (Wrexham), who is also Glasgow-bound, just missed out on the medals, coming fourth in the U23 200m in 24.51.

Another bronze medallist was former Maldwyn athlete Sian Swanson (Swansea) whose success came in the U23 triple jump with a best of 11.36m.

Though she placed only sixth in the U20 100m Deeside's Shannon Malone had good reason to be happy as she set a new pb of 11.78.

Other North Wales athletes competing included Tom Earley (Colwyn Bay), who was sixth in the U23 800m in 1-55.98, and Georgina Outen (Birchfield), who was seventh in the U20 1,500m in 4-27.68.

 * Former Colwyn Bay member Rachel Johncock, who is in the Welsh team for Glasgow, was the most successful sprinter in the GB team at the European team championships in Germany. She won her 100m heat in 11.77 for sixth place overall.
