Borders League (1)

RECORD FIELD AT CAPENHURST

There was quality and quantity on view at the opening fixture of the Borders League at Capenhurst, with a record field of 367 finishers and some outstanding performances.

Eryri Harriers, who could take the Division 1 title at a stroll if they were more consistent, claimed a superb 1-2, with Matthew Roberts beating teenager John Spill by just four seconds.

It was last year's champions, Wallasey, who headed the team competition from Wirral, with a very strong Deestriders squad topping Division 2.

Like Eryri, Wrexham consistently underperform in the League but they were out in force this time, claiming three - Daniel Weston, James Mills and Darren Rowlands, in the top 10 finishers.

In the ladies' competition Chester Tri made an immediate impression in their first season in Division 1, coming out ahead of Wirral, while Prestatyn just edged it from neighbours Abergele in Division 2.

First lady home, claiming her second League win, was  Liz Renondeau of the hosts Ellesmere Port, with Sarah Roberts (Chester Tri) second.

Full results are on the Borders Road-Running League website.
