Good luck

GOOD WISHES TOTHE SAYERS

It was an emotion-packed and hectic weekend for Deeside's Ivor and Sue Sayer for very different reasons.

Ivor - North Wales's "Mr Starter" - was taken to the Maelor Hospital on Friday evening after suffering a stroke while on the way home from work.

It is understood that although further tests are to be carried out the signs are good.

A few hours after that little crisis Sue, the chairman of the North Wales Regional Athletics Council, had to head for Llandrindod Wells and the AGM of Welsh Athletics, where she was duly elected as President.

Both have served the sport exceptionally well over the years and all their friends and acquaintances will be wishing them well over the coming weeks, months and years.

Snowdonia Marathon

SNOWDONIA DOUBLE FOR BANGOR STUDENTS

Ex-Bangor University student Rob Samuel completed a hat-trick of wins in the Snowdonia Marathon while current student Sarah Caskey chalked up her first victory.

The men's and women's races were very different, with Samuel pulling away from his closest rivals in the closing stages but Caskey having to withstand a late charge by Melanie Staley to win by just six seconds.

It was former Eryri athlete Gwyn Owen who put up the strongest challenge to Samuel, setting the early place and then staying close to around the 18-mile point. In the climb from Waunfawr Owen fell back and lost three places. Second place went to Robert Bridges (Manchester Tri), who improved on his 2012 time by an amazing 20 minutes.

Caskey, who hails from Peterborough and who clocked 2-52 in the Manchester Marathon earlier this year, led from the gun and clung on although the expected challenge from ultra-specialist Emily Gelder, the 2012 champion, never really materialised.

The student was given a fright with just a few hundred yards to go when Staley suddenly appeared alongside her, but she had enough left for a final sprint which took her clear.

 * Special congratulations to Eryri veteran Iorwerth Roberts who crossed the line in 5-20.21, the only person to have completed all 31 Snowdonia Marathons.

Grand Prix Express NWCC League (2)

DEBUTANT PROVES SURPRISE PACKAGE

The second fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League produced a shock result as few of the competitors or spectators knew the identity of the winner of the men's race.

Russell Bentley from Kent won numerous fell-races in the area earlier this year but this was his debut in an Eryri Harriers vest and he was involved in a close tussle with another new Eryri member, Nathan Jones, before pulling away in the closing stages.

Triathlete Jimmy Kershaw (Oswestry), in his first season in the senior competition, produced an excellent run in third place.

In the women's race teenager Georgia Garner was denied her second outright win by Alison Lavender (Oswestry), but Iolo Hughes was as dominant as ever in the under-17 men's event.

Former Deeside athlete Charlie Hulson helped Sale's "A" team to victory in the English Road Relays in Sutton Park, Birmingham. The Rhosesmor runner clocked 17.37 on the second of six stages.

His former Deeside clubmate Ricky Challinor clocked 19.00 on the anchor leg for Liverpool Harriers, who finished 19th.

Flintshire 10k

ONE-SECOND WIN FOR FAST-FLOWING JORDAN

Eryri's Brendan Rothery paid the price for easing up before the line when he was pipped by his clubmate Jordan Evans in the Flintshire 10k at Mold.

The new one-lap course was tougher than previous years, following the road up to Nercwys used for Borders League fixtures.

Rothery seemed to have victory sewn up but he failed to spot that Evans was closing fast, and with his momentum the latter surged past to win by a single second.

ANY PERSONAL AMBITIONS:  An over-70s' Welsh vest?

ANY REGRETS: None, apart from foolish over-training and getting injured

ANY EMBARRASSING EXPERIENCES: Offa's Dyke Relay Challenge in sub-20 hours. I lost my way on leg halfway through. Challenge completed in the dark, with no records broken.

WHAT CHANGES, IF ANY, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE SPORT: 1. It's a great local running scene.  2. Would like to see the Olympics cut down to size. It's currently too elaborate, with obscene amounts of resources to stage what should be a simple life-enhancing sport.
